He, an East Coast creative, was hitchhiking in California in 1963. She, a young California girl in a VW Beatle, was on her way to her holiday job. Their names: Doug Tompkins and Susie Russell. Their mutual journey began on Highway 89 in Emerald Bay - and lasted longer than either could have imagined when they first met. Five years later, they founded a company that continues to make fashion history: Esprit.
