You have seen items on

Gordon and Rena Merchant, an Australian surfing couple, started producing surfing swimwear in 1973 because they couldn't find a swimming costume that suited them. Created by surfers, for surfers, these products quickly became a success, surpassing Australian beaches. Indeed, it was from the end of the 1970s that Billabong affirmed its image and established itself as the leader in the surfwear market in Australia. Establishing the brand in Europe was more laborious, but its relaunch at the beginning of the 90s with D.O'Neill, the current CEO, resulted in a turnover of more than 3 million francs in just one season. Billabong was first distributed in Europe via another surfwear brand, Rip Curl. In 1993, the company separated from this brand and became independent with a 50 and 60% increase in turnover each year. In 2000, the brand was floated on the stock market and, thanks to its growing reputation, acquired textile brands over the years.
