Aigle's journey began in 1853 when Hiram Hutchinson, an American expat living in France, bought a rubber patent off its inventor. Hiram went on to set up his own brand called 'À l'aigle' in a nod to America's emblematic eagle. It didn't take long for him to start specializing in making rubber shoes for the sport and leisure markets. He made his boots by hand, perpetuating unique expertise in protecting human feet in the great outdoors. Year after year, Aigle grew a little more, and soon emerged as a leading name in the sector. In 1989, more than a century after it was first founded, the brand launched its very first city and country clothing and footwear ranges, and opened its first store in Paris' well-heeled St-Germain-Des-Prés quarter. Aigle continued to thrive and expand, and hit Japan in 1993 with its very first Tokyo store in the Shibuya district. Today, the brand is home to over 200 master rubber-workers who handcraft close to 4,000 pairs of boots every day. Aigle has been keeping tradition alive for the past 160 years now, handing down its expertise generation after generation at its workshops in Châtellerault, in the French département of Vienne. Ever aware of the fashion industry's environmental footprint, Aigle recently gained 'mission-led company' status by launching its Positive Impact scheme, all part of its vision of "doing something good today, for tomorrow." A committee sets out the targets to be met and provides the brand with everyday support in designing sustainable products, choosing ethical suppliers, and building awareness of eco-friendly habits and processes within the company. Aigle is now fueled by a desire to create more responsible, planet- and community-friendly products by committing to cutting back on its greenhouse gas emissions, supporting associations, and complying with international labor standards.
