Melissa's story began back in 1979 in Brazil. Alexandre and Pedro Grendene decided to set up their own brand inspired by the shoes worn by sailors on France's Côte d'Azur. The brand's iconic Aranha style was born, and quickly became Melissa's flagship product despite it only taking twenty-six seconds to make. Striking a balance between fashion, art and design, Melissa's shoes are certified vegan and cruelty-free. No animal-derived products are used to make the brand's footwear at any stage, from design to shop shelf. Drawing on its exclusive patented Melflex® material, Melissa designs 100% recyclable shoes that offer flexibility and comfort whatever the occasion. The brand is hugely environmentally aware and proactive, and was part of the 1% For The Planet movement. It also supports the Green Friday campaign by boycotting Black Friday every year. It backs the Surfrider Foundation, an association that works to protect and preserve our planet's lakes, rivers and oceans. Its sustainable development policy is governed by a UNESCO-led eco-responsible framework, too. Melissa regularly collaborates with artists and fashion houses such as Jean-Paul Gaultier in 1983, Karl Lagerfeld, Jeremy Scott, Vivienne Westwood, Opening Ceremony, and world-famous architect Zaha Hadid. In 2020, the brand celebrated its fifteenth anniversary in its art gallery, La Galeria Melissa, a space where fashion, art and design thrive under the same roof. Year after year, their concept has gathered speed, with a Galeria Melissa opening in London and New York, both designed as temples to architecture, fashion and art. Edson Matsuo, the brand's creative director for the past three decades, is a master in the craft of harnessing avant-garde ideas and free-spirited, truly uniquedesigns. Sneakers, ankle boots and sandals rub shoulders in Melissa's collection of responsible shoes!
